Biography
Mark Russell recently joined Wyndcroft in 2024 as the Latin teacher for grades 5-8. Having recently graduated from Villanova’s Classics MA program for Latin and Greek, he is eager to share what he has learned in the classroom to Latin students from the other side of the desk. Most of all, he enjoys examining the sources of where words and phrases come from, and how cultures are connected through language.
Born and raised in New York City, Mark was exposed to language learning at a young age – starting with Spanish and Latin in middle school, continuing at Kent School in Connecticut, in addition to Ancient Greek. He continued Latin and Greek throughout his undergraduate studies at the College of Wooster in Ohio, in addition to 2 years of Russian, where he earned his BA in Communication Studies in 2012.
After a decade-long hiatus from academia, Mark left his restaurant manager position to return to the classroom at UPenn’s Post Bacc Program for Classics in 2020, and eventually moving onto Villanova’s MA Program in 2022, as well as spending 2 summers learning German for reading purposes.
Mark lives in Blue Bell with his wife Claire, son Bruce, baby daughter Amy, and 2 cats Bart and Batman. During his free time, Mark enjoys visiting the local bouldering gym, losing to his betters at chess, and attempting to make sourdough bread.
